Fiestas

We have been enjoying all of the different cultural events and fiestas represented here at Rio Grande Bible Institute. The first was our own little English tea party for some of the missionary kids on campus. Grace, Hattie and I had fun making scones and cupcakes as well as decorating the house. At the party we made friendship bracelets and the girls played and danced as little girls do.

 

In September we joined with our neighbors and opened our apartments to about 20 of the students and families from Chile for the Independence Day of Chile. It was an evening of making lots of Chilean foods, music, dance, speaking Spanish and fun with friends. It was great to see 10 or more people crammed into our small kitchen at one time all working together to prepare the meal. We set up tables outside and enjoyed the meal under the carport, listened to lots of Chilean music and even participated in traditional dances.

Just last weekend Grace and Hattie put on a Mexican Fiesta for us with a Pinata included. This was the final event for their study of Mexico. They are studying Countries and Cultures this year through their home school curriculum called My Fathers World. Being at RGBI has been great for this study as there are so many people right here from all around the world.

The most recent event was "Dia de la Raza". This is the celebration in the Latin American and South American world of Columbus Day. It is a big party here with the students representing their countries with foods and cultural information. We had the opportunity to help with the country of Ecuador. We made lots of yummy Empanadas de viento which are sweet fried dough filled with a little bit of Ecuadorian cheese and sprinkled with sugar. If you check out our pictures in the photo gallery there is a short video of a traditional Ecuadorian dance performed by two of the Ecuadorians here at school.

As you can see we have been keeping busy yet we are looking forward with much excitement to being done in December and going to Ecuador in January!

As you have time some of the specific areas of prayer for our family are:

Josh and I are writing papers each week in Spanish. The topics range from Bible study,devotionals,personal experience etc... These are 10 minute speeches that are presented all in Spanish. We have already shared our testimonies and you can keep us in mind every Wednesday from now until Thanksgiving as we present the rest of our papers.

We have just sent in a lot of paperwork and are waiting for all the papers to be gathered so we can go to Houston and get our visas for Ecuador. We hope to be able to go to Houston in late November so you can pray for all of the needed paperwork to arrive by that time.

Grace and Hattie are very excited as they are both a part of the annual Christmas musical at our church. They have both tried out for speaking parts and Grace also for a solo. The musical is called The Present is The Future. This has been a huge blessing for them as they will not likely have this opportunity again.

For the whole family to have a great finish in school. The girls with their home school and us with Spanish. We are so excited to get to Ecuador at times it is hard to keep our minds focused here.
